Daniel Kane:

The Heat by Heather Killough-Walden is book one in her The Big Bad Wolf series. I have had this series on my kobo for ages and finally decided to give it a go. While this first book was not at all what I expected, it was still a very enjoyable read and I am glad that I finally got around to reading it.

The world that Ms. Killough-Walden has created is a very imaginative and unique one. It is a world full of werewolves, vampires, black magic and other dark surprises. Initially, I was a little taken aback as to how dark this all seemed. This author does not hold back when it came to the violence depicted and so forth. There are many scenes where the heroine is abused by the villains of the story. Lily was a strong character; however, there came a time where I simply wanted her to stop getting abused. Further, the werewolf lore illustrated by this author was very different than anything I've read. Here wolves seemed a lot like vampires with their need and thirst for blood. This all worked with the world that was portrayed, it simply was distinctive.

I loved all the action and fast-paced nature of the storyline. Although, I did feel like the romance did take a back seat to all the goings on with the good guys versus the bad guys. The heroine was kidnapped often and found herself in the possession of other males that were not her intended mate. This left the hero and heroine with only a handful of romantic scenes. Further, I felt like the sex scenes also were rough and had a hint of violence to them as well. This worked I suppose since the wolves all seemed to be very powerful and led by their base desires. I would have liked to see more tender and gentle moments between the hero and heroine, especially due to the fact that their time together was not a big part of the book and also because the heroine experienced A LOT of abuse and horrifying violence. It would have been nice for Daniel to show her some love, tenderness and beauty.

All in all, I did enjoy The Heat. It is fast-paced, interesting and the author provided some great dialog between the characters. I am looking forward to the next book in this series as I am very anxious to see how Malcolm Cole gets his woman!
